sofia dulce
Sofia Macdonald is a New York City based textile artist whose practice bridges traditional craft and modernist design. Raised in Los Angeles and Zurich, she began her artistic journey through quilting, a foundation that continues to inform her reverence for handwork, folk traditions, and the quiet discipline of inherited techniques. Sewing since the age of eight, she approaches textiles as both structure and story where pattern, repetition, and material carry cultural memory. Printmaking is essential to her work, serving as both a conceptual and formal anchor within her practice. Through processes of layering, inking, and transferring, she explores repetition, negative space, and modular composition.
Her brand “sofia dulce” is equally shaped by architecture and the geometric rigor of the Bauhaus. The movement’s clarity of form and belief in the unity of craft and design resonate throughout her practice, an influence further developed during her studies at New York University. Her compositions explore mathematically derived organic shapes, balancing structural precision with an intuitive, playful approach to color.
In addition to her studio practice, Macdonald works in upholstery at Jouffre, where technical discipline and meticulous craftsmanship sharpen her sensitivity to form, tension, and construction. Through textile, she investigates the space between softness and structure, tradition and modernity, craft and architecture.
